Wexford County Council’s recent allocation of a €4.9 million grant under the Large Scale Sports Infrastructure Fund marks a significant investment in the future of sports in the Gorey region. The new sports complex at the former St. Waleran’s Demesne site, with a total budget of around €10 million, aims to provide state-of-the-art facilities primarily targeting minority sports. This project, designed by architects Ailtirí, has gained full planning permission and is expected to greatly boost the local sports community. Phase 1 of the project will see the development of new playing fields and looped walking tracks dedicated to minority sports like hockey, cricket, and athletics. These additions highlight the Council’s dedication to promoting sports that have traditionally received less attention and resources compared to mainstream sports like football and rugby.
Community Involvement and Planning
The project has been a collaborative effort from the start, with a steering group formed two years ago comprising members from Gorey Hockey Club, Croghan Athletics Club, Gorey Cricket Club, Gorey Cycling Club, and Gorey Basketball Club, in addition to council officials and Dr. Yvonne Byrne. The community-driven approach has facilitated a strategic alignment of resources and ensured that the needs of these minority sports clubs are met adequately. Cllr. Pip Breen, Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council, lauded the dedication and hard work of the club members during both the planning and funding phases. This communal effort underscores the significance of the new complex, not just for Gorey but for the entire East Coast region. This pioneering project is part of a larger vision encapsulated in the St. Waleran’s Masterplan, which includes developing housing, community, and sports facilities to create a holistic new neighborhood in Gorey.
Long-Term Benefits and Regional Growth
This ambitious project aims to enhance the region beyond just improving sports; it plans to foster an inclusive sports culture, which is crucial for regional uplift. Cllr. Oliver Walsh, Chair of Gorey Kilmuckridge MD, highlighted the significant value of the €10 million investment in enriching the county’s sporting scene. By focusing on minority sports, the project not only diversifies athletic options but also promotes inclusivity and community engagement. The upcoming Phase 2, which will add cycling and basketball facilities and an indoor community sports building, underscores the Council’s commitment to comprehensive sports infrastructure development. This initiative offers local residents of all ages and interests opportunities to participate in various physical activities. The steering group’s phased implementation ensures sustainable growth and adaptability for future needs. Ultimately, the sustained focus on fostering minority sports will nurture athletic talent and community unity, setting a strong example for future regional development efforts.
