NIOSH Unveils Toolkit to Enhance Safety in Construction Design

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has launched an innovative “Prevention through Design Toolkit for the Construction Industry” aimed at revolutionizing safety measures within the sector. The toolkit seeks to integrate safety considerations into the design phase of construction projects, a proactive approach that aims to mitigate or completely eliminate potential hazards before they pose a risk to workers. This strategy is seen as the most effective way to ensure worker safety, as it tackles issues at their root rather than addressing them reactively after an incident has occurred.

Key Components of the Toolkit

The toolkit is comprehensive, encompassing approximately 150 different PtD controls that address a variety of common hazards in construction. These controls are organized into tables for ease of use, guiding architects and design engineers during the critical planning and design stages of construction projects. Among the primary areas of focus are fall prevention, struck-by incidents in highway work zones, and hazards commonly encountered in residential construction. Specific aspects for fall prevention include managing roof openings, roof access, roof edges, window washing systems, and outdoor platforms. In the context of roadway construction zones, the toolkit targets pedestrian workers, vehicles, heavy equipment, traffic, and overall project planning intricacies.
