Tools for measuring embedded carbon in building materials are on their launching pads

Two of the construction industry’s heavyweights are each about to roll out tools that measure embedded carbon in building materials, with an eye toward significantly reducing the carbon footprint of nonresidential buildings in the future.

At next week’s Greenbuild expo in Atlanta, Skanska USA will officially introduce its Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3), a tool for calculating and evaluating carbon emissions embodied within an array of building products. Skanska developed this open-source tool with C Change Labs, and with Microsoft provided seed funding.
