Rapid Replaement of Genoa Bridge Could Be a Model of Project Management

A new Genoa bridge was inaugurated Aug. 3, almost two years after the collapse of the city’s Polcevera viaduct that killed 43. The precise causes of the collapse and culpability remain uncertain. Government ministers are working to eject key shareholders from the bridge’s privatized toll road operator Autostrade per l’Italia. The bridge’s rapid replacement has been a “model” of effective project management that could be used to accelerate much needed work on Italy’s infrastructure, says Pietro Salini, CEO of Webuild S.p.A., a partner in the new Ponte San Giorgio’s two-firm design-build team.
